James Paul Watson is the Director of Stem Cell Research at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center; Co-founder of the University Stem Cell Center, Santa Monica, California; Co-founder and Principal Investigator at Biostrux, and in private practice in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Los Angeles, California.
After receiving his Doctor of Medicine from Loma Linda University Medical School in 1986, Dr. Watson interned in General Surgery at Wright State University, Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and was a Resident in General Surgery there through 1991. He completed a Residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Wright State University, Kettering Medical Center, Kettering, Ohio, from 1991-93; followed by a Fellowship in Microvascular Surgery in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California, 1994-95.
From 1995-2002 Dr. Watson was Director of Microsurgery & Endoscopy at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA He has been Attending Plastic Surgeon at various UCLA medical center hospitals since 1995, and from 2000-2005 he was Chief, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He has also been Attending Plastic Surgeon at Providence Tarzana Hospital, Santa Monica, since 2007 and Attending Plastic Surgeon at Saint John’s Health Center, Santa Monica, California, since 2008.
Dr. Watson has held various teaching appointments over the years, including Associate Clinical Professor, Division of Plastic Surgery, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Director, Plastic Surgery Microsurgery Laboratory, UCLA; Director, Plastic Surgery Endoscopic Training Laboratory, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; and Director of Resident Education, Division of Plastic Surgery, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
He is active in clinical research and has been awarded more than $1.5 million in grants as a principal investigator for research into various topics in plastic and reconstructive surgery. His investigations have resulted in more than two dozen journal articles and book chapters in publications such as Journal of Surgical Research, The Handbook of Plastic Surgery, and Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery. He is a frequent presenter and speaker at national and international scientific conferences, such as the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Symposium of the International Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery. In February 2010 he spoke on “The Science and Promise of Stem Cells” at the 50th Annual Meeting of the California Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Watson is certified by the American Board of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has served on various national committees, including the National Board of Medical Examiners Plastic Surgery In-Service Exam Committee and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF) Core Surgical Examination Committee.
