Douglas Cook, M.D.


Dr. Douglas Cook graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana; completed a Master’s degree in Biochemistry at Northeast Louisiana University in 1975; and earned his M.D. from Louisiana State University Medical School in 1979. Upon completing his internship and residency at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, he entered private practice in Family Medicine in 1982. Since 1986 he has specialized in Addiction Medicine, becoming one of the first physicians in the United States to be accredited through the American Society of Addiction Medicine and to be board-certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He served as Medical Director of the Addictive Disease Program at Woodland Hills Hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, before founding one of the largest and most respected treatment centers in the country, the Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center.

During his 24-year career, Dr. Cook has helped thousands of addicts turn their lives around. His clients have included medical professionals, famous athletes, CEOs, and under-served minorities. He has been published in many leading newspapers, journals and magazines, and has also been featured in several episodes of the popular A&E television series Intervention.

Dr. Cook has served as chairman of the Impaired Physicians Committee for the Ouachita Parish Medical Society from 1988 to 1990 and as chairman of the Fifth Louisiana District Physicians Health Program from 1990 to 1995. From 2006 to 2008 he was an ad hoc member of the Louisiana State Commission on Addictive Disorders Committee, Department of Health Hospitals. He served as president of the Louisiana Society of Addiction Medicine from 2003 to 2005 and then again from 2007 to 2014. A frequent speaker at conferences on addiction and peer assistance programs across the United States and Canada, Dr. Cook has also written a new book, Everything You Need To Know About Addiction… Before You Spend a Penny, which was released in April 2015.
